The Gods Must be Crazy
The movie " The Gods must be crazy " describes Xi , a bushman and his tribe living in the Kalahari desert in Africa . They're contented because God has provided them with plenty of everything . 1 day , a glass coke bottle is thrown out of an aeroplane upon the tribe. This strange artifact seems to be another boon from the gods—-Xi's people find many uses for it. But unlike anything that they have had before, there is only one bottle to go around. This exposes the tribe to an unknown phenomenon, property , and they soon find themselves experiencing jealousy, anger, hatred, even violence , in a tribe that had never squabbled before . Thats when Xi and his men decide that the gods have to be crazy to send them that ill fated thing and decide to return it to the Gods by throwing it off the edge of the earth .
I was astounded to find that the first emotion I felt on watching this small humorous incident , was envy . I was envious of those little bushmen with their simple living n simple thinking who dismissed the Coke bottle as one of God's error . I was specially envious of the ease with which they decided to throw it away , so easily conquering the demon of greed of possession , which we struggle to fight with every day of our lives .
I find myself getting wistful about the nomadic life ,when men were wanderers and their primary concerns were food , survival and the continuity of species . Instead since the beginning of time , the intelligence that sets us apart from animals, has been used in conquering and outwitting nature , and now a time has come that man is beating it to death .
There is a severe problem with our culture. We see the space we inhabit as not wild, as not nature. Nature is in the parks, is in the mountains we drive over to sun ourselves on the beach, in unreachable and savage depths of the tropical forests. “That is nature,” we say, “not this, not our home, not our workplace.” We are strangers to nature, to other human beings, to parts of ourselves. We see the world as made up of separate, isolated, nonliving parts that have no inherent value.
Some may say that right now is the best time to be alive but i cant warm up to the idea somehow . I think we've embarked on a self destructive journey in our quest to make life simpler and instead complicated it more than ever before . Thoreau said “ Cars sound like cares to me” . The world is getting very organized. Everything in its place and a place for everything . Rules and regulations and social conventions . Hierarchies of authority , spans of control , long range plans . We're all getting leashed to the great wheel of uniformity , feathering our emotions and most importantly giving up the freedom we started out with .
As for me , Savage Garden's lyrics ring true here " I want to live... like animals
Careless and free... like animals
I want to run through the jungles, the wind in my hair
And the sand at my feet "

ReplyDelete@Vaibhav :Its true .. science has given us hope of better living ... but thats what leads to all the complications .. we always want something better .. we want a solution to everything ... we want to become immortal .. that goes against nature .. thats what im trying to say ..
