Euthanasia
Euthanasia
Sometimes suffering is as inevitable as it is unfortunate.. I have seen families suffering as their kin battles a debilitating incurable or progressive medical condition. Every person has a right to live, but if that living is reduced to breathing through a tube and swallowing food through a pipe, is that acceptable? Or instances where an active ticking mind is trapped inside a lifeless body .. an excruciating state to imagine.. Are we stubbornly prolonging suffering for the patient and financial burden and mental angst for the family ? Humankind has been manipulating nature for a very long time now, but death is as inevitable as life and our attempt to play God by physicians back fires in more ways than one. If we try to fight nature to this extent, we will pay a huge price for sure. Survival of the fittest is the law of nature. Sometimes I think, it is ok to accept, to let nature take its course and let go. Medicine is a rational science, but life and death isn’t ..
Again , congenital defects seem almost like nature’s cruelty , but it may just be considered a manufacturing defect in the grand scheme of things and an early withdrawal from this suffering is divine justice ! However, we label these conditions with various names, incurable they may be, and do manage to keep them alive but again as dysfunctional beings with various limitations.. again we negate natures laws, cruel as they may seem and create trouble and chaos, although we may support it by the right to life concept … again the reminder that a ticking heart alone does not constitute life, but medicine in its rationality overlooks this fact completely
When we speak about smart breeding in animal husbandry , can we not be sensible for the planet and practice the same amongst humans as well .. but we are too identified with “ my blood” , societal pressure creates the need to have children even if risk of congenital disorder is high , there is no decrease in fact only an increase in the number of congenital defects as the population grows exponentially ,and ignorance prevails in society.
Its time that doctors learn to think of a patient as a thriving living being rather than isolated separate parts, according to their specialty and take a call on irreversible, incurable or congenital disorders.. the prolongation of life using life support should be debated.. passive euthanasia should not be illegal but a real possibility after appropriate counselling and taking the wishes of the kin into account
