Intolerant

We are so intolerant of the slightest individualistic variation as a society.

I was rudely reminded when I saw a 3 year old perky little girl being labelled as speech challenged and denied admission to a “in-demand” school following a highly competitive entrance interview ! .. and then being sent in for speech and occupational therapy classes ! This was a bright imaginative kid whose only “folly” was that she had difficulty forming full sentences .. Why was that such a huge red flag .. Was it so difficult to understand and accept that part of her brain was still creating connections ... She was always the quickest , the most expressive and resourceful during games and play ..  couldn’t they see that the creative and imaginative side of her brain was ablaze?

“A little information is a dangerous thing, so is a lot”, said Einstein, and wasn’t he relevant !

Her parents now face anxiety over why their child is different, why she is singled out by her teachers, why she can't keep up with other kids etc etc ..

Was there ever a time when this would have been taken with a pinch of salt .. perhaps .. when the child would have been given the time and space she needed and surely she would have come into her own ..I’m sure other kids had a language of their own to communicate with her .. kids don't need sentences to play together, do they?  When people weren't so quick to define what was normal and what was not .. an inclusive and accepting way of life ...

Intolerant and demanding .. society has always defined the limits of normality .. and it is basically determined by the way the majority behaves... And we all know how dull and rigid the majority can be.. What about the few who are born slightly different or have different choices or abilities .. how can such a slight variation be given a medical label.. Over-evaluating and information overload without context is a great fallacy of the medical fraternity as well. I daresay ignorance and intolerance are all pervading.
