Desi Boyz

This 32 year old man comes from Haridwar , declaring he has been using anabolic steroids at his gym for last 4 years.. and has completely stopped having erections etc ever since he stopped using them since last 6 months  …a common scenario .. gonadal suppression due to high dose exogenous anabolic steroids and testosterone … but I check his testosterone and that is in the normal range.  I tell him the axis has recovered and most of his issue is now psychological.


But he is frantic as he plans on getting  married in the next couple of months !

I ask him if he has a sexual partner. He says he does .. I ask him – is this the woman you intend to marry ? he says – no no this one is already married .. how can he marry her .lol

I suppress my smile and tell him “ fine if you are comfortable with her you can work on your confidence with her “

 Then he pauses and looks down and  - : he asks me if I have seen the movie – Desi boyz and my eyes widen with curiosity .. Gigolo ? I can barely keep a straight face .. he knows I am listening with interest  .. and he starts painting stories of what a stallion he used to be pleasing multiple women and they would be gaga for him and want him back all the time .. all this  while he would inject himself with testosterone so he would be “pumped “ all the time  .. he shows me a picture on his phone displaying washboard abs and johnny Bravo style biceps .. Mr. Desirable .. haha

Now he feels pathetic he says..hes ruined it all

So this was the real story ..

Anyway he is a smiling pleasant person and I reassure him that he is on the way to full recovery and no permanent damage done and now not to play with his health anymore.

A really entertaining OPD session .. and I quite liked this guy for his candor

Lessons from New York

Here I’m describing some revelations I had during my 2 months doing electives in a medical school in New York. P.S.-Please do not be offended by “ We Indians”. I’ve made fun of Americans and Indians equally. Cheers! 1. American movies somehow take place only in New York. 2.No one talks to each other on the plane. You end up missing the loud banter of aunties sitting on side berth and gossiping loudly for the whole train’s benefit. But then they start feeding you on the plane and that somewhat makes up for the lonely feeling :P 3.There are no coolies haggling amongst each other to grab your luggage. Trolleys instead, and one costs 5 $!! (=Rs.250):O:O.. And from here on the dollar to rupee conversion starts in your head… and doesn’t end till you’re back in India. 4.The taxis that we take so much for granted in our country are a luxury in US.. and you’ve to tip the driver just for driving the damned taxi.. hey isn’t that what we’re paying him for in the first place ?...

Overwhelmed

            I was in my alma mater today .. and incidentally got talking with an MBBS student .. she was awed when she heard I was a past MBBS student from the same college and now MD Pediatrics with a Fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology.. somehow I felt undeserving of that emotion ..  Am I a big deal in the medical world ? What has it really translated into ?  I have all these years of training and labour and sweat .. has it shaped me better, have I evolved or have I also embibed cynicism and a touch of bitterness on the way ? She went on to ask me what had kept me motivated to achieve what I have .. and I muttered something about it not being as great as it appears. . she was a little disbelieving .. I told her it's been a long and arduous journey .. and Im still to see the light at the end of the tunnel. She opened up about her problems then .. being holed up in a roomful of 10 in a strange city; facing sleep...
